What “I can smell you from here” means

In everyday English, “I can smell you from here” is a teasing exaggeration: someone’s smell — sweat after the gym, too much perfume, cigarette smoke, last night’s garlic — is so strong that you notice it from across the room. Between friends it is a joke. From a stranger it is an insult.

It also works figuratively. “I can smell a lie from here” or “I can smell your fear from here” means I can tell what you are hiding. The speaker is not talking about a nose at all; they are saying you are easy to read.

Online, the line and its variant “I can smell you from over here” are used as a reaction to a post someone finds rank — a bad take, an obvious lie, a suspicious deal. The meaning is the same either way: whatever you are giving off, it is reaching me.

The official itch.io page does not explain the title, and the creator has not explained it in the comments either, so there is no official answer to quote. What the page does say is what the game is about:

This game was made in an attempt to capture a very specific fear of mine: telling one lie for whatever reason, then having to make up increasingly ridiculous details just to keep the story consistent.

Read against that, the figurative sense fits: a game about one lie that keeps growing is a game about whether the person across the table can smell it. The official content warnings — body horror, violence, cannibalism, references to murder, strong language, sexual themes — suggest the literal sense is not far away either. That is our reading, not the creator’s, and we stop there because the rest is what a run is for.

The one time the creator has talked publicly about a nose, it was about Idimya’s face after she drinks an espresso:
